Good Freeware Editor |
Does anyone know of a good freeware editor that is ideal for zApp's ZML files? Besides Notepad. I downloaded jEdit but its a JAVA application and takes too long to load and feels clunky.

I use Crimson Editor for code files (I havent set it up for ZML yet), and apparently you can make "Custom Syntax Files"...
haven't looked into it too much but im gonna set it up for zApp hopefully XD |

I use several myself. I use Crimson when I want syntax highliting. I use EditPad Lite when I just want a better notepad. EditPad Lite is at http://www.editpadpro.com/editpadlite.html

I like UltraEdit personally, but it costs money.

Why not Editplus (www.editplus.com) ??
It's easy, support a lot of programming language and you can create your own Syntax file
It's in evalutation version, but it never expires |

So many editors...so little time ;)
I haven't heard of Editplus. Of course, when I'm *programming* I'm using Delphi with it's own editor IDE along with the CodeRush addon. No reason to use anything else since it completely integrates the entire development and debugging system.
So, when I'm not programming, I usually just need something fast and lean and EditPad Lite fits that bill nicely. It adds tabs for easier multi-file editing than Notepad. Both Editpad and Notepad are in my "Send to" menu so that I can easily edit any file.
Yes, I admit that sometimes I still just use Notepad. My editing needs just aren't very demanding (outside of Delphi) |

I usually use Visual Studio's IDE (both Visual Studio 7 and .NET) and a couple other languages. Crimson Editor seems good enough (and is free) for editing ZML files. I just needed something better than notepad and I like having the code colorized .

Emacs!
Oops, sorry, wrong war. But seriously, emacs is great on both win and *nix ..
Hmm, is there a list of ZML "keywords" or whatever, to aid in writing syntax highlighting thingies?

Of course theres emacs for Windows!
ftp://ftp.gnu.org/gnu/emacs/windows/
And also xemacs for windows, if you prefer. (http://www.xemacs.org/Download/index.html)
Syntax highlighting sounds like a good idea! (Assuming one can add language syntaxes easily, with external files..

Of course we expect Zugg to do everything. Zugg, while you're at it can you put some code in there to do dish washing, too? My wife's got me washing dishes now (I just snuck away ) and was hoping you can somehow incorporate this into zApp for me.
Just let me know your progress on that. The sooner the better! (I better get back to dishes before my wife catches me!) |

While you're at it, can you put some code to clean my room, pass school and make my first billion? Thanks! :D

While I suppose the first step would be getting a blue tooth enabled (or some other form of wireless/wired networking) dishwasher .............

Snytax highlighting would have to be built into zApp I imagine right? Theres no way to do that via a dll that would interact with the editor?

Yes, it will be built into zApp. But with the current properties and methods it is *very* possible to add it yourself with a DLL I think. Right now you already have full control over text styles and can easily manipulate the text and styles in the control. Take a look at the zMemo documentation...it's pretty extensive now.

Ok...so let me clarify myself before I start to whip out my syntax highlighting libraries from work (for php/java/js/jsp/xml)...
Are you going to be making the syntax highlighting itself for every language, or just an interface from which we will define syntax'? |

I'm just going to make the interface for user-supplied syntax files.
In fact, feel free to discuss whatever program you think has the best syntax definition files. For example, the EditPlus files would be really easy to use in zApp. But if there is something better out there that already has a lot of syntax files defined for it, let me know. |

Hmm...I've never used EditPlus...but I'll look around, I use Eclipse almost religiously now and it highlights what I want based on custom settings...

My favorite syntax highlighting editor is MultiEdit. I worked for them early in my IT career. The settings are quite easy to set, unfortunately, their custom file format is a PITA to share. I think UltraEdit has the most custom syntax files that I've seen. I'll check out EditPlus.
Can we have other people list other editors? I want to see what else is out there. |
