did windows update screw up my telnet/zmud? |
zmud 7.04, just did winxp update, some security updates and whatnot, and now i am unable to connect to the mud i play on using zmud or telnet
i turned off windows firewall, and i turned off norton intenret security to see if it was blocked, and that didn't help
does anyone have any idea what is up? i am able to connect using an http proxy (java of some sort), but iwth a straight telnet or using zmud, i cannot
HELP ME PUH-LEEZ? |

Hi, have you tried using the current version 7.05a? I use it with Winxp all service pack and security upgrades and it works fine for me.

no dice. downloaded and installed (i still have weird problems with the zmud licensing, i had to do the offline license)
regardless, couldn't connect
i can't telnet in no matter what though, so i don't think the zmud version matters. |

What, >exactly<, happens when you try to connect?
Are you getting an error message?
Does zMud try to reconnect repeatedly?
Does your computer lock up?
Does a little green genie materialize from your cd-rom drive and cast a spell which causes you to wildly slam your keyboard with open palms until zMud closes? |

well, it depends on how i try to connect.
if i use telnet, straight telnet, i.e.
telnet myfavorite-mud.org 4000
I get the "could not connect to myfavorite-mud.org on port 4000" message in the little c:\> prompt box
if i try to connect to the mud straight through using zmud....it just...tries to connect over...and over...and over...and never connects.
if i connect to a proxy my friend has set up, i get the message
Connected to proxy-mud.org
then just as it is about to ask me
Do you want color (Y/N)?
I get disconnected.
i *can* Connect to the mud through java/http though. |

try turning off all firewalls and any program that may be blocking it and seeing if you can connect... if you can reopen them one by one and see if something stops it.

I had this same problem.Heres what I did:
Close zMUD, go to the main directory, C:\zMUD, the default location. Then delete the mud folder. I turned off all my firewalls and made them not turn on with boot up, then I restarted the computer. For several hours I couldnt connect via telnet, or zMUD, but Java worked fine. Now I have firewalls back up and zMUD is fine. Also allow zMUD to access through the firewall :\ Check to be safe.
