It would seem that your running the current version of zMud in XP's compatability mode. This is not necessary as zMud function natively in XP. The use of this mode is likely the cause of the problem.
Try right-clicking on the zMud.exe, select Properties. Under the Compatability tab uncheck everything. |

Run Windows Update and make sure you have installed all of the updates and patches for Windows XP. zMUD needs an up-to-date Microsoft ADO/MDAC software and that's the usual cause of problems.
Also, where in zMUD are you getting the crash? Are you getting a zMUD splash screen at all? If so, what is the last thing displayed in the splash screen before it crashes. |

OK, if you aren't even getting the zMUD splash screen then it sounds like the eLicense system might be messed up on your computer. Try going to the page http://www.zuggsoft.com/zmud/elicense.htm and down near the bottom of the page, there is a link to download the eLicense uninstaller. Run this program. Then run zMUD again to re-initialize eLicense.
Also, it might help to download the latest zMUD version since it was updated recently to use a newer version of eLicense. When you install this new version, install it to a different directory on your computer in case one of the files in your current zMUD directory is corrupted.
Also, be sure to do all of this from an account with Admin privileges on Windows. |

You may be having problems with your Windows XP applications compatibility log.
This may help, can't hurt to try...
Right-click on the 'My Computer' icon and click on 'Properties' to get 'System Properties'. Choose the 'Advanced' panel and click on 'Error Reporting'. Disable the error reporting altogether or just for zMUD and then running zMUD again. |

disabling error reporting gave the same result. this is fairly odd.

You shouldn't need to reformat your hard drive. At worse you just need to reinstall Windows XP on top of the current installation. Then reinstall all of the patches using Windows Update. It's very rare when you need to actually reformat a hard disk (which then requires that you reinstall *all* applications, which can be a real pain).
Have you tried redownloading zmud and then installing it into a completely new directory on your computer in case you have some sort of corrupted file in your zmud directory? |
