Why won't this work?
 
I'm sure I'm saying something wrong to the script parser but I can't figure this out.
mstronghold=keeper|paladin|monster
mnumber=1
monster=@mstronghold.@mnumber

why does monster now equal
keeper|paladin|monster.1
instead of
keeper
?

Because that is precisely what you are teling it to do. You can do one of these two:
monster=@{mstronghold.@mnumber}

or:
monster=%item(@mstronghold, @mnumber)
