Usually, I just select the character I want and then click the open button. Sometimes I doubleclick on the character instead. Other times I right-click and select Open. If the character is already open, but offline, I usually use the Reconnect command from the File menu but occasionally use the #CONNECT command. There's also the #SESSION command.
If this doesn't help I'm sorry, but your topic name isn't very clear about what you want to do.

zmud.exe session_name_here
I *believe* will auto start zmud with that mud; as Lightbulb said, not overly clear.

Then this support library article should be what you are looking for.

Okay, how do you do this in WinXP? The rules appear to have changed.

open a folder window (My Computer or similiar)
click the tools menu, select "folder options".
click the right most tab, "File types"
then follow the directions from the support library.

I did try that, but telnet isn't in there.

It's in there. If it's not in there, you probably would be having trouble connecting to a mud within ZMud, since the telnet protocol would likely be missing from your computer.
You are looking for something with the text of "URL: telnet protocol". It most likely has "(NONE)" next to the little icon on the left.
If it really isn't in that listbox, you most likely have to reinstall something from XP.
