Error processing the help update

When I do Get Updates from either CMUD or the help viewer, I get:

There was an error processing the help update: File <unknown>, Line: 1 Col: 1 Error: Invalid XML Character found

Any ideas?

Could someone explain the protocol used to download the update? And is there a manual process I can use?

The updates occur over http (I believe). This used to happen for me too and then seemed to fix itself on one of my upgrades. The problem isn't necessarily your firewall but the the fact that the received data is corrupted.

Try this. Go Program Files\CMUD\help and back up or rename the cmudhelp.db. Then try downloading it again and see if you have any better luck.

After doing that, I seem to download 200+ KB of data (according to Norton), and then get the same error as before.

Not sure what to suggest then. Sometimes disabling Norton does really turn it off. It's better to config it to allow CMUD to be able to access the net freely.

One of the many reasons I don't use Norton software anymore. I hate these things that just get in the way of using the computer. In any case, the previous responses are correct...*something* on your computer is preventing CMUD from getting a full data download. The Help data format is in XML, and if it doesn't receive the full file, then it's missing the closing </cmud> tag at the end of the XML stream, and the help system can't parse the data. I'll eventually improve the error message so it doesn't just give a cryptic XML error, but the problem will remain. You need to find some way to allow CMUD to fully download the data, which is more than just 200KB. Seems like there should be some sort of "whitelist" that you can add CMUD to allow it to have full network access.

In the settings, CMUD does have full net access, and disabling the firewall, virus, etc. doesn't seem to help. Could I have the URL to the data? I'll see what happens when trying to use Firefox to pull it.

It is:

http://www.zuggsoft.com/cmud/doc.php?since=0

for the full update. It writes this to the file helpdata.xml in your Windows Temp directory (or wherever your Windows Temp path is set).
