When selecting multiple variables in the package editor and changing the type, only the last selected one gets changed.

That is correct. You cannot modify properties of multiple selections at the same time. The only property that works for multiple selections is the Enabled checkbox. This might be something that I can improve in the future, but it gets very complicated since your selection might not contain settings that all have the same property.
