XML data sharing

Greets!
I've been looking for a way to send information between computers/zmud applications.
After some heavy searching on the web, I finally stopped at XML data sharing, seemed easiest.
Problem is that I have no prior knowledge about XML, so if someone could point me in the right direction I would be very happy.
Not expecting someone to write me a manuell but a short list would be nice. What I need to install/learn to pull this off.

The place to start would probably be the W3C site: http://www.w3.org/ .... of course that may be a bit much, since it literally -is- the manual (or spec, really).
