COM Error |
I've been using zMUD for about a year with no problems, then yesterday I started getting a window popping up over zMUD saying something about a COM error, and prompting me yes or no whether I want to shut down zMUD. Whether I hit yes or no, zMUD shuts down, and then the entire computer shuts down right after it. Sometimes the error message doesn't even show, and the computer just shuts down spontaneously when I'm running zMUD.
I'm running Windows XP and just did a full system restore about a month ago. Any thoughts on why this is happening? |

Never heard of anything like this. zMUD certainly doesn't ever do anything that would cause your computer to shut down. Sounds like some other software on your system is trying to shut down zMUD, and when you try to shut down zMUD when it's in the middle of doing something, then zMUD might give a COM error because it's currently using it's own COM object and doesn't like to be closed.
In other words, something on your computer is telling it to reboot. Windows tries to shut down applications before rebooting. When it tries to kill zMUD, zMUD might be in the middle of processing triggers or something and would complain with the COM error. Other times if zMUD isn't using a COM object then zMUD would just get closed without an error.
But zMUD itself would never initiate this shutdown.
I would scan your system for viruses and other trojans. Make sure you have run Windows Update and installed all updates and patches. Check to make sure your hardware drivers, like your video driver, are up to date, since Drivers have full control over Windows and can cause it to shut down.
And I assume you are using zMUD version 7.21 (you didn't mention that). If not, upgrade to 7.21. But it sounds much more like a system problem rather than a zMUD problem. |
