Error: Access Violation |
I am currently running Zmud 7.21 and I keep getting this error:
Error: Access violation at 0x056FFECC (tried to write to 0x00000000), program terminated.
I am not doing anything consistently that would set off this error and it seems to happen within every 10-20 minutes after I've booted up the program.
I spoke to a friend of mine about it and he seemed to think it had something to do with a memory leak and said I needed to restart the computer. However that doesn't seem to have made any difference as I've been getting it for the past two weeks (since installed Zmud on to this computer) and I've rebooted numerous times since then.
I'd really appreciate if anyone could shed any light on this error as it's become increasingly annoying. Also could I ask if anyone has any suggestions for fixing it, that they be posted in baby steps, I'm still learning my way around Zmud and this computer.
Thanks! |

More than likely it's an issue of settings file corruption, brought about by you trying something to learn how to script and then either you or ZMud saving the file. Try turning off triggers (clicking the gun icon in the lower right) and playing for a while. If the error goes away, then one of your triggers is FUBARing your settings. Figuring out which one is just a matter of disabling all of them and then re-enabling them one at a time to see how they work out. When the error happens, the last trigger you enabled is your culprit. If it's not a trigger, try doing various things to see if you can bring about the error (ie, if it always occurs when you click on a particular button). If that doesn't help, you might need to resort to the Migration Guide. I believe a link to it is found in the Zmud Support section of the Support menu.
Another point of corruption is the mapper. That's going to take a bit of work to figure out, but more than likely it's a room that didn't save properly or is doing something it's not supposed to (mostly a script issue, so that narrows things down a bit). No quick and easy way to fix this, unless you count scrapping the map entirely and doing it all over.
Still another is the database. This one's kind of obvious, however, so it's not likely to be the culprit.
Finally, the last common point of corruption is the character icon itself. It's almost always brought on by scripting errors. To fix this just delete the character and create a new one. You will need to ensure that your MUD info and files are properly set up in the character properties, but it's a relative piece of cake compared to any other technical stuff you might have to do in ZMud. |

There are many things that can interfere with the proper operation of zMud. In order to attempt to solve this problem I will need answers to many different questions. Some of the questions may not make snese to you, but the answer to them is very relevant.
First is system specifications? While zMud should run correctly on any Windows 95 or better system, there have been some driver specifc problems (most notably with XP), so I would prefer to eliminate this.
Second, have you ever had zMud begin to load? By this I mean...
2a. Is the splash screen displayed?
2b. What point does it get to?
This will help to narrow the problem down to a specific subsytem. If it hasn't even displayed the splash screen then that indiciates another type of problem. |

Vij, he said: "I am not doing anything consistently that would set off this error and it seems to happen within every 10-20 minutes after I've booted up the program."
One can assume he's past the "did zmud load?" part :-) |

vitae: Heresy! Do not blaspheme the Vij! <>
@nikki: Seriously though, short of The Man himself (re: Zugg) working with you, if anyone can do it Vijilante can. Best wishes on fixing the Access violations. |

Hrm. Evidently I shouldn't really try to help with such questions on Friday nights. Being mostly in the bag and way past my bedtime made me quite silly.
MattLofton suggested the proper trouble shooting method for your problem. |

Hi,
I am also using zMUD 7.21 on WinXP (with all the latest patches and updates on both) and keep getting the Access violation error after some 10-15 secs. I manage to get into the application and connect to a MUD, but every time it crashes after 10-15 secs, even if I do not connect.
If I start the PC in safe mode zMUD works fine, so obviously it is a conflict with something else running. I have ended all processes that I can end from the Task manager, but no luck.
It is my work laptop, so there are a whole bunch of security applications running and I am not allowed (not sure if I am even able to) to uninstall/stop them.
If anyone has any idea at all, I would greatly appreciate it, as I have no idea how to solve this. Any help is appreciated.
I am still hoping that it is not a lost case and that I can continue using zMUD and will not have to resort to using some inferior MUD client
Thanks,
T. |
