Import ASCII script problems |
Lately I've had a weird problem importing ASCII scripts into zMUD... Especially ones that involve #button or #status. What'll happen is that zMUD will lock up and then crash, not loading the script at all.
I really can't reproduce this with a simple script... but does anyone know why it might do this? I don't know where to begin looking for the problem behind this one. |

Buttons don't translate to ASCII very well. It's best to either import buttons as settings (Import Settings) or make the buttons yourself in the Settings Editor. The same may be true of status lines although I don't recall anyone else reporting problems with them.
It isn't necessary to import ASCII scripts, they can simply be pasted to the command line in whatever size blocks you want. Pasting one setting at a time might help you narrow down your problems. |

Actually, I didn't mention that they go in fine if I paste them (provided there are no blank lines in the script).
I'll keep that in mind, though, and avoid buttons and statuses.

No offense intended... but why even HAVE an ASCII import function then?
The ability to post a large and involved ASCII script for other less experienced Zmudders to import would be a valuable feature in my opinion. |

If I was a 'less experienced' zMudder, I would prefer whichever method works most reliably. In fact, even as a 'more experienced' zMudder I prefer the method I've found works more reliably. If I was posting a large and involved ASCII script for 'other less experienced' zMudders I would want them to use the method which is most likely to result in success.
As a 'more experienced' zMudder, I prefer the command-line method for my own use. I particularly recommend it to anyone who lacks the experience to troubleshoot a script if something goes wrong. I've posted quite a few long and involved scripts, and never once have I recommended using 'Import ASCII'. |
