Suggestion concerning Reg Codes

I have sent several emails in hopes of having a mistake of my own rectified, but as I have heard nothing back, I do not know what is going on. However, my mistake prompted an idea. How bout making it to where anytime someone buys a registration code, it creates an account for them on the forums, as well as a registry code database? That way, if they ever do lose their code, they have a way of retrieving it.... or some other external way of retrieving it....

Zugg doesn't want to make it too easy to get a lost registration code. The reason is simply that it would become easy for a hacker to access the database and thus steal everyones reg codes.

As to your lost registration code, a few months ago Zugg decided that he could no longer spend time looking up and mailing codes to people who lost them. There is a sticky post about it at the top of this forum that explains the whole thing. I would suggest you simply purchase a new code.

Vijilante, I would gladly purchase a new code if I had the money. I am completely to blame for not having my code, I had saved it to a file to print before redoing my computer, forgot to print it, reformatted, and no longer have it. I got that code as a gift from a friend for christmas because I could not afford it then. To many people, $20 - $30 might not seem like much, but when you are trying to make a life for yourself, get through college so you arent struggling with things, that is alot of money. But, if it comes down to getting a new license, I will have to wait for a while, and find another means of mudding, as it is one of the only things I do enjoy in my free time. If you think this is a "feel sorry for me" post, then you are not getting the point at all. People that do make mistakes and admit it should not be held in the same category as those who willingly cause problems.

You'd also think that Zugg would just have it all in a database and be able to pull it up with a #QUERY (&email =~ "%-1")

Imagine getting 100 requests to do this every day, from real users. That's 100 queries, 100 reply emails, about 2 minutes each (because of course, you close the support db between emails). There's 200 minutes - or 3 1/2 hours of every day wasted.

Now imagine another 100 "fake" requests. It's not unreasonable that someone who registered zMUD with email address "A" could have changed addresses, and be requesting their code with email address "B". If they request their reg code, but claim they don't remember how they purchased it, all Zugg has to go on is their name. Suppose their name is 'John Doe'. Or suppose they tell all their friends just to email Zugg and ask for 'Joe Pirate's reg code. It'd be easy to lie and get a free registration.

That's a lot of wasted time and effort. Personally, I wish there were a better way, but when you consider the support costs of offering that service when a little responsible thinking* by the user in the first place would avoid it, it does become a burden I'd be happy to get rid of.

*Responsible thinking defined: Print your registration code email, keep it in a safe place. You don't pay for car repairs or damn near anything else without getting a printed receipt. Why wouldn't you print an online receipt as well?

As I stated, I did not buy my copy, a friend of mine purchased it for me for xmas. Though I did get the reciept, that was 2 years ago, and I very rarely keep track of reciepts. It was my own fault, I had saved the stupid code to an excel document along with several others, forgot to print it out, reformatted and install a new copy of windows xp. The *only* software that I lost the key for permanently was zmud, go figure. Every other company that I have a program from has a way of retrieving your license. Just my luck I guess. The even more ironic part, I sent an email that contained at least half of the reg code, including proper order, you would think that would suffice as evidence that I was not lying. Oh well...
